The idea behind plusone
Most savings advice tells you to put away a fixed amount every month. Set a budget, stick to it, repeat. It works — but for a lot of people, it doesn't stick. Life gets in the way, the amount feels arbitrary, and when you miss a month it's easy to give up entirely.
plusone works differently. Instead of a fixed amount, you save one penny more than yesterday. Day one is 1p. Day two is 2p. Day one hundred is £1.00. Day three hundred and sixty-five is £3.65. The daily amounts are so small that you barely feel them — but they compound into something genuinely meaningful.
By the time you reach day 365, you'll have saved £667.95. That's a holiday, a safety net, a Christmas fund, a house deposit contribution — whatever you're saving for.
Why it actually works
The Plus One method works for a few reasons that go beyond the maths.
The amounts start tiny. On day one you save 1p. On day ten you save 10p. It's so easy to start that there's almost no reason not to. And once you've started, the habit forms before the amounts get large enough to feel like a sacrifice.
The progress is visible. Every day you save, a square on the year grid turns green. After a few weeks you can see your streak building. After a few months, most of the grid is green and stopping feels harder than continuing. This is by design.
Missing a day isn't the end. Life happens. You miss a day. With plusone you can catch up — save the missed amount whenever you're ready, and carry on. No starting over, no guilt, just progress.
What plusone actually does
plusone is a savings tracker, not a bank. We never hold your money, never ask for your bank details and never set up any direct debits. You save into your own account — a bank account, a savings jar, a piggy bank, whatever works for you — and you use plusone to track that you've done it.
Each day you open the app, enter the amount for that day, and tap Save. That's it. The app tracks your streak, shows your progress on a year-at-a-glance grid, and celebrates your milestones with trophies as you hit them.
Who is it for?
plusone is for anyone who wants to build a savings habit but finds traditional methods too rigid, too complicated or too easy to abandon. It's particularly good for:
- People who've never managed to save consistently before
- Anyone saving toward a specific goal — a holiday, Christmas, a new car, an emergency fund
- People who want to build a habit rather than just move money around
- Anyone who finds satisfaction in streaks, progress bars and small daily wins
Getting started
Creating an account takes about 30 seconds. You pick a name for your save, choose a start date, and you're ready to go. No credit card required, no subscription, no catch.
You can run multiple saves at once — a holiday fund, a Christmas fund and an emergency fund simultaneously, for example. Each one has its own grid, its own streak and its own total.
The maximum you'll ever save in a single day is £3.65 — on day 365. Most days it's much less. The discipline it builds is worth far more than the amount itself.
